Dear Families, We have had a large number of students develop strep throat. We will be doing a deep clean of the school and continue to promote hand washing. Below is some information to help guide you about strep throat. Strep Throat Information § Strep throat is a bacterial infection that may cause sudden, severe sore throat, fever and tender nodes in the neck. § Strep throat should be treated with antibiotics. § Sometimes a throat swab at your doctor’s office is necessary to tell if the sore throat is caused by strep bacteria. § Antibiotic treatment can help ease symptoms and may prevent future problems. Strep throat can spread to others until 24 hours after you begin taking antibiotics. During this time, students should not attend school. When should you call for help? Call your doctor or seek immediate medical care if: § You have a new or higher fever. § You have a fever with a stiff neck or severe headache. § You have new or worse trouble swallowing. § Your pain becomes much worse on one side of your throat. Watch closely for changes in your health, and be sure to contact your doctor if you are not getting better after 2 days. For health information call Health Link at 811. Mrs. Fraser Tomorrow is Library Day and Sharing Day! Today, as part of our Fairy Tale unit, we read a book Ms. Quon found at the Book Fair. It is called the Three Little Superpigs! It is a story that tells what happens AFTER the end of the traditional Three Little Pigs story. We loved it! We also practiced our Reader's Theatre version of Goldirocks (yes...ROCKS) and the Three Bears. We will be performing this as a class during our Learning Celebration assembly on Thursday, April 25. We ALSO talked about why Goldilocks would feel the need to eat Someone else's porridge, sit on their furniture and use their beds. We decided that her own bed probably wasn't built very well and that it was falling apart. So......we are going to plan, design and build a new bed for Goldilocks so she can stop going into strangers homes! We will use our learning from our Building unit to do this challenge! Today we brainstormed possible found items we could use in our building. If you have any of the following at home you could donate, please send it with your child over the next week: Cardboard from empty paper towel rolls and toilet paper rolls Old building blocks Empty cereal boxes Empty kleenex boxes Empty and clean small yogurt containers Cotton balls scraps of fabric sturdy styrofoam Math update:
Grade 2's have been learning about estimating by using 10 as a referent, identifying what 10 a number is closest to and how to tell if a number is even or odd. Grade 3's have been learning that multiplying is the same as repeated adding with the same number, multiplying by 0, 1's and 2's. Today we learned that multiplying by 2's is the same as adding doubles and that multiplying by 4's is just doubling our answer we get when doubling! Our science challenge today was: How to build a bridge that we could drive our car over that is at least 20 cm, using straws (we used a toy car to test!) All groups discovered they needed to use something to secure the straws together to make it work! This afternoon we finished building towers out of raw spaghetti and marshmallows. Students found it more difficult than they thought it would be. After their initial attempt, each group talked about how they could revise their plan to make their tower stronger and more stable. They illustrated each attempt until they came up with their final towers Students are asked to wear black and white if possible for their Spring Concert tomorrow. We will have a dress rehearsal in the morning as our last practice for the evening performance!
Tomorrow is also library day. We will not have sharing day tomorrow. The following is information regarding our upcoming Spring Concert!

This week's Words of the Week: star starting artist chart spray spayed stray straying actor parked In our Building Unit today we continued our exploration of triangles and how they are used in structures for strength and stability. Students worked in groups of 3 and went on a scavenger hunt to take pictures around the school of examples of triangles in structures. Tomorrow we are doing our third experiment: How can I build a tower that is strong and stable using only raw spaghetti noodles and marshmallows? |
