THE ULTIMATE
This Wednesday is the last day before Teacher's Convention and Family Day. We will be linking our learning that day to Valentine's Day. Students have made Valentine Card holders in art. Those students who wish to hand out Valentine Cards on that day may do so, providing they have a card for each class member.
We were working very hard this afternoon on our displays for Culture Night which is this Wednesday as well.

Thank you to parents for making sure students had their swim stuff ready every day and those that came to the pool with us!
Today we had a basic fact check-up. Students had 5 minutes to answer all the facts that they knew right away and then go back to try out a learned strategy with the rest. Ask your child if they improved from the last one! Reminder: Tomorrow is a PD Day and no school for students. Swimming Day 2: Another successful day. I am very impressed with the effort and joy all students are showing, as well as their cooperation and respect for the instructors and bus driver!
Keep practicing those basic facts! Swimming Day #1
We had a wonderful first day of lessons! Everyone seemed to be happy and cooperative in the pool and came back hungry, tired but relaxed. In Math this week we are focussing on visualizing what we are multiplying, as well as estimating first so that we can check that we have a reasonable answer. For our Cultural Night, our class has decided to 'host' two countries: Congo and Italy! Reminder: Next week is Swimming Lessons at Killarney Pool!
We will be swimming every afternoon Monday through Thursday (Friday is a PD Day). We will be getting on the bus at 1:20 and should be arriving back at the school by 2:45 each day. Students should wear their bathing suit under there clothes to school and have dry things to change into after swimming. A bathing suit and towel are required each day. In Literacy this week we are continuing our learning around writing paragraphs. Paragraphs help us organize our writing and communicate our ideas on a clear manner. We are focussing on topic sentences and details relating to the topic sentence.
In Math we are looking at strategies for multiplying large numbers. It is very important that students continue to practice their basic facts to make this concept easier. Grade 5's - Please send in Ski/Snowboard forms with the $10 by Wednesday so that we can send the info to the instructors. If you are missing forms just let me know and I will send new ones home. Thanks to all of you, we have all of our swim forms in! As we look forward to our lessons, the Grade 5's learned today that they will be invited to take part in Ski/Snowboard lessons with the Grade 6 class on February 19th and 26th at Winsport! Please look for the forms that went home today and discuss with your Grade 5.
Minus 35 degrees with the windchill - YIKES!!
It looks like the cold weather is with us for the duration of the week. Please check that your child has mitts, hats and boots before they head out as some students arrived this morning without. In Math this week we are focussing on using methods of Addition and Subtraction with large numbers to solve word problems. Students are encouraged to keep practicing those basic facts for our upcoming unit on Multiplication and Division. Our January Nifty Thrifty Fifty words are: illegal dishonest replacement rearrange performance misunderstand irresponsible We have almost all our our class' s swim forms. At this point we do not have any volunteers. If you have your Volunteer Police clearance in place, please consider volunteering as we need to meet a minimum adult to student ratio in order to go.
Yesterday we had a basic fact check-up. Our strategy is to do all the facts we know first so we know which ones we need to work on next. Each student knows which facts they should be working on next. Spending a few minutes practicing each night will help to reach our goals of knowing all the facts up to 10 x 10. This week we have been practicing Zentangle patterns and created a project today by tracing our hand and filling it with patterns. See our beautiful work below. Please be sure your child is dressed warmly for our polar weather hitting us next week! |
